Robin said"I used to go to high school with it around my neck, not knowing the value of it,"
Robinson got curious about the pendant's value a few months ago when she noticed the diamonds were set in the same way real ones are. She took it to a local jewelry store for a once-over.

1) Logo: At close inspection, the Starbucks logo makes no sense. Since Starbucks was named after a nautical character, the original Starbucks logo was designed to reflect the seductive imagery of the sea. 4) Hand in the Tip Jar:
Back in 2008, a San Diego judge ordered Starbucks to pay back $86 million in tips (plus interest) to over 100,000 of its California baristas. For years, Starbucks had a policy of spreading the tip jar love among all employees, even shift supervisors. The cash and coins (and occasional Skittles) were pooled weekly and divvied out according to how many hours the employee had clocked, adding up to an extra $1.71 an hour.

An ex-barista filed a class-action suit in 2006 citing that supervisors aren’t entitled to tips under California law. The Super Court judge agreed, and dropped the $105 million bomb on Starbucks in a curt four-paragraph ruling. Starbucks called the suit “fundamentally unfair and beyond all common sense and reason,” citing the fact that supervisors also make coffee and serve customers.

In a rare win for corporate American (ahem), the judge’s ruling was reversed a year later by the Court of Appeals, who agreed that supervisors “essentially perform the same job as baristas.” Just don’t tell that to their girlfriends.

Get one the second month, or even the second week after the dust settles.

2. iPhone OS 4.0. Remember the lack of 3G wireless, Exchange messaging support, or the ability to copy and paste text from the original iPhone? The iPhone has improved steadily with each release of the OS and rumors suggest that version 4.0 will have a number of improvements you will want for your iPad.

3. Missing Features. The iPad was expected by many to include a camera. Not so much so you can hold your 10-inch iPad up and snap a photo of your goldfish, but to provide a webcam and video conferencing capability for the device.

4.The entry level price of $499 seems quite reasonable, but things change and prices drop. Perhaps Apple will find that nobody is willing to pay extra for 3G connectivity, phase out the Wi-Fi only models and offer the Wi-Fi plus 3G iPads for the same low price, or maybe after the initial euphoria wears off Apple will cut prices to jumpstart sales as it did with the iPhone. It could happen.

5. Improved E-Reader, but it also lacks some of the annotating, bookmarking, and cross-platform syncing found on competing e-readers. Apple is bound to tweak and improve the e-reader functionality over time.

When it comes to some things that can be altered with a simple operating system update, early adopters have little to fear. However, if the iPad 2.0 ends up having a camera, faster processor, and expandable memory no amount of syncing with iTunes will fix that for the original iPad owners.

Keep that between us, though. We don't want everyone flooding Craigslist with iPads and driving prices down.

President Obama Convenes National Security Team

A day after soliciting the views of congressional leaders, President Obama is convening top national security officials Wednesday afternoon for a strategy session on Afghanistan and Pakistan amid escalating U.S. casualties in Afghanistan and signs of declining public support for the war there.

About two weeks later, U.S. ground forces began pouring in, beginning a buildup that now amounts to nearly 68,000 U.S. troops, plus about 37,000 from other NATO countries.

A new action/adventure "Aliens in the Attic"

It's hard to get worked up about "Aliens in the Attic," a new action/adventure family film for parents and children who have already seen "Up" and the latest Harry Potter I guess it's doubtful that a lot of them will be asking for their money back after seeing this movie. But they won't be remembering too much about it 24 hours later, either. Quite funny.

Carter Jenkins stars as Tom Pearson, a geeky math whiz that has trouble communicating with his parents and an older sister played by Tisdale. (We know he's smart, because he uses his computer to change his own grades.) The Pearsons drive to a lakeside vacation home with their cousins, the alien invasion begins almost immediately and the kids spend most of the movie fending off three of the four well-armed little green men.

Of course the smallest and cutest of the invaders is a kindly alien, who breaks away from the others and befriends the youngest girl in the house. There are a few clever jokes - including one about how the kids can't operate a rotary phone - and a lot of drawn-out action scenes. How the parents in the film don't notice any of this is happening can only be explained as Hollywood magic.

You can usually gauge the badness of these kinds of movies by the number of former "Saturday Night Live" and "MADtv" cast members are in supporting roles. "Aliens in the Attic" has three: Kevin Nealon, Tim Meadows and Gillian Vigman. Which means it's nowhere near as bad as "Coneheads," but still isn't worth your time.

Mark Cavendish, a sprinter who has been fighting for survival in the Alps, roared back into life on Friday with a staggering stage triumph against the odds that made him Britain's most successful Tour de France winner in history.

He has now won nine Tour de France stages in just 13 months, including five this year, to take him past Barry Hoban's record.

Cavendish, who could yet make it 10 stage wins on the Champs-Elysees tomorrow – has also won six stages of the Giro D'Italia during those 13 months. L'Equipe, the French sports paper, has, with good cause, dubbed him 'Le Phenomenon Anglaise' and in cycling terms he has been the only story to match that of the clash between Alberto Contador and Lance Armstrong in this year's Tour.

Friday's triumph was one of the hardest earned of his career in a race ridden at a furious pace, so much so that the leaders arrived in Aubenas a full 35 minutes ahead of their estimated arrival time. That suited Cavendish and his trusty lead-out men fine but the category-two climb outside Aubenas certainly did not.

If the stage had been in the first week we would have put it down as a sprinters' stage but at the end of the third week, we weren't sure," Cavendish said. Today is saturday, I am off thanks god. I got up little late and decided to search some good stuff (blogs/news) For some reason I stumbled across some good site the other day. I don't know why, but I started to read some of the articles. Further exploration led me to the Human rights article. Human rights in the United States has been a somewhat controversial subject over the years. One might think that a country that was founded on breaking away from the tyranny of monarchy, seeking justice and liberty for all, would naturally be a bastion of human rights for all people. But the history of this democracy has shown human rights to be more complicated when transformed from ideal to practice .American human rights reflect that this issue, in practice, is hard to balance when one tries to combine it at a national and a personal level.One arena where this dilemma appears in American history is balancing the rights of the many versus the rights of the minority, or in some cases, the individual. The issue of federalism, the philosophy which bound together a loose federation of former colonies together under one nation, has from the nation's inception had to combat against the concept of states' rights. The balancing act requires the federal government to maintain authority while not infringing upon the rights of the states. This leads to a constant weighing out of legislation in light of allowing people to choose a certain kind of life in one state and feeling assurance that this freedom will be protected to live this way, while still holding onto national identity as Americans. The present debate over gay marriage is an example of states choosing their own destiny with regards to particular issues.
Historically, the American Constitution allows for this kind of liberty for states to create their own legislation, with the federal government keeping out of the way. It is a way where one can exercise personal freedom in their local region. This personal determination was a unique way that the young democracy created its own definition of human rights.

More than 400 US lawmakers have signed letters urging President Obama to step up efforts aimed at achieving Mideast peace.In the lower House of Representatives, 330 legislators signed a letter sponsored by Democratic majority leader Steny Hoyer and Republican minority leader Eric Cantor.The letter was sent to the White House, the same day Obama hosted Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas for their first Oval Office talks since the US president took power in January.

Kailash ‘Kalau’ Singh is from the village of Chatav outside the holy city of Varanasi. He is 63-years-old and the father of seven daughters. He has gone for 35 years without bathing apparently in an attempt to have a son.
Madhusudan(his neighbor) says that a seer told Kalau years ago that if he didn’t take a bath, he would be blessed with a male child. It seems that many Indians prefer sons for financial reasons. Sons are breadwinners. Girls have to have the matrimonial dowry for the grooms family when they marry. Also, in Indian culture, all their earnings go to their husband’s family. For those reasons, girl children are considered a burden.
So for 35 years Singh hasn’t bathed. It appears his efforts are not working so far.This has been costly for him. He used to own a grocery store, but had to go out of business when customers quit coming to his store because of his ‘unhealthy personality’. He now works in the fields. He also incurred the anger of his family when he refused to take a ritual dip in the river Ganges even after the death of his brother five years ago.In spite of what his neighbors have said, Kalau claims he doesn’t remember how it all began. He claims his pledge to not wash is in the ‘national interest’. ‘I’ll end this vow only when all problems confronting the nation end,’ he said.
Even though he refuses to take water baths, he does take fire baths. That involves standing on one leg next to a bonfire, smoking marijuana and saying prayers to Lord Shiva. He claims its just as good as using water to bath and the fire kills germs and infection in the body.Oh, and he doesn’t brush his teeth either.Considering this whole scenario its not surprising that he hasn’t had a male child. The surprising thing is that he’s had any children at all.

He said she initially pleaded guilty to the charges under pressure but retracted her statements later, and the appeals court accepted that.She had a report about the US attack on Iraq prepared by the strategic research centre at the (Iranian) presidency," Saleh Nikbakht said, adding, "The research centre deemed the report as classified. But she had not used it at all.
Nikbakht did not say how Saberi had managed to gain access to the confidential report. US federal authorities have unearthed a major H-1B visa racket with the arrest of at least 11 persons, most of them suspected to be from India. Vision Systems Group, an IT company headquartered in South Plainfield New Jersey, has been indicted on 10 federal counts including conspiracy and mail fraud charge. Viswa Mandalapu, is its CEO and president, according to the information available on the company's website.
US Attorney Matthew Whitker alleged that Vision Systems Group used fraudulent documents to bring H-1B visa workers into the country, he was addressing a press conference at Des Moines, Iowa. The Government is seeking the forfeiture of $7.4 million in proceeds raised through the alleged offenses.He said "This is just the tip of the iceberg as far as this investigation goes,"Besides Vision System Groups, at least five other companies are under investigations because of their alleged visa fraud. "We are not seeking to discredit the 'Story of India' in its entirety, but viewers should be aware that a major error was made in the documentary that fails scrutiny and should be corrected,"I think if anybody looks at any "Panchang" you can find how accurately the astrologers are calculating the solar and lunar eclipses without the help of any modern scientific equipment. "This theory, that is not supported by archaeological evidence, was first posited by European Indologists and British colonialists, eventually finding support from a section of India's politically motivated linguists and historians such as Romila Thapar, and famously, controversial Harvard linguist, Michael Witzel," she said. This theory, the HAF believes, is ‘agenda-driven’. In his documentary, HAF says, Wood holds that the early Hindu practice of worshipping devas, or demigods representing elements, ‘somehow implies that these practices were imported from Central Asia.’ While referring ‘obliquely’ to the Aryan Migration Theory as controversial, HAF said, Wood fails to present contrary evidence that many scientists believe refutes the claim that the progenitors of Hindu civilisation came from west of the Hindu Kush mountains of Afghanistan. "There is no debate that India was always the cradle of Hindu civilisation, and the Vedas, the Hindu's holiest scriptures, are the recorded history of our ancestors," said Suhag Shukla, HAF's Managing Director. However, he asserted, it is the latest genetic evidence, based on chromosomal and DNA analysis, that scientists believe definitively discredits the AMT.

Why the police Officer did that? we can't figure it out until and unless the court prove it. think that there was no reason to kill that man even if he did have any thing to do with the altercration on the train. A videotape recorded by a passenger on the train shows an officer with the Bay-Area California Rapid Transit Police Department standing over Oscar Grant III of Hayward, CA as he is laying facedown and handcuffed. The officer then appears to fire a bullet into Grant's back as fellow officers look on. The shooting took place just before 2 AM, after five officers arrived at the Fruitvale stati on in response to reports of a fight on a train. It has not been confirmed whether Grant was involved in the altercation.When will this crazy mess end? I really do not understand what was the motive behind for this!! This is completely terrible and miserable for the family, and I hope the officer responisible for this is brought to justice!

"We are tightening the encirclement of the city," the offensive's commander, Brigadier Eyal Eisenberg, told reporters. "We are not static. We are careful to be constantly on the move." The defiant Hamas showed no signs of wavering. Gaza's Hamas prime minister said the the militants were "closer to victory." the fighting started on dec.27 and uptill today it has killed more than 900 Palestinians, about half of them civilians, 13 Israelis, including 10 soldiers killed. Israeli jets and attack helicopters pounded suspected Hamas positions in Gaza City, particularly the homes of the Islamic militant leadership. Among the array of challenges facing Barack Obama in his first year in office will be the ongoing struggle against terrorism, both at home and abroad. As the vicious terrorist attacks in Mumbai in November and the recent Hamas rocket attacks against Israel made clear, no nation involved in international politics and commerce is free from the threat of political violence. The past few years have shown that civilization rests on a much more precarious footing than we might have believed even a decade ago.
But who is the real enemy in the global fight against terrorism? Even to call this conflict a “war on terror” is misleading, given that our enemies are of such disparate origins and intentions. Sweeping generalizations—that our enemy is the Islamofascist, the Muslim fanatic, the anarchist, the ignorant youth—are often harmful in the formation of any effective response to terrorism.
A sincere yet harmful truism is that our real enemy is ignorance, that if our opponents could be freed of propaganda and false conceptions, their rage against Euro-American civilization would abate. But any truthful analysis of terrorist motives requires the concession that the real root cause of their actions is resentment. Often enough, education actually leads not to greater appreciation for Western culture, but to even deeper antipathy. The hijackers of Sept. 11, 2001, are a case in point. Many of the attackers had achieved high levels of education as engineers, scientists and academics. Many studied abroad, and several—ringleader Mohammad Atta among them—would fit the definition of upwardly mobile young professionals. Nevertheless, they were seduced by an ideology that convinced them that their death, and the deaths of thousands of innocents, was the appropriate response to their condition.
While scholars like Lawrence Wright, author of The Looming Tower, the best-selling study of Islamic terrorism, have shown the powerful influence of fundamentalist religious beliefs in terrorist recruitment, groups like Al Qaeda gain from the religious and from the resentful, drawing devotees from those who find that the adoption of Western economic and social practices does not always translate into economic opportunity or social progress. Oftentimes the very technological advances that should have led to greater upward mobility—the Internet and global communications among them—have provided terrorist groups with the means to link up previously isolated cells. Access to the media has two ill effects, offering greater awareness of severe economic disparities and an introduction to a global entertainment environment profoundly at odds with the religious and cultural sensibilities of many peoples.
Another alarming portent of future terror is the real possibility of widespread state failure. In its most recent analysis of global trends, the National Intelligence Council suggested that by 2025, as many as 36 nations (with a total population of 1.4 billion) will face shortages of fresh water and sustainable food supplies. A number of these nations, which are overwhelmingly in Africa and the Middle East, are already unable to provide consistent law and order. These same countries are also experiencing a “youth bulge” of young men and women now entering adulthood.
State failure also represents a failure of compassion on the part of the wealthy and stable nations of the world. Imperiled nations support exactly the populations among whom resentment will be strongest if the world community fails them, if instead of jobs and security they find chaos, disease and suffering. In the past, the international community has failed to intervene effectively when neglected situations became humanitarian catastrophes, with Zimbabwe and Somalia as prime examples. As Pope Benedict XVI noted in his visit to the United Nations last year, the “duty to protect” is not just an internal matter for nations, but an international duty.
It is crucial that the United States abandon the rhetoric that casts the international struggle against terrorism exclusively in terms of a crusade against religious fanaticism. The anger that accompanies the ongoing and worsening social ills among the world’s poorest populations also contributes mightily to terror’s allure. Remedying such widespread resentment will not be easy, and cannot be done alone. A reasonable beginning would include greater international cooperation on sustainable development, renegotiation of lopsided trade agreements, a rethinking of the economics of globalization and an end to military and political unilateralism on the part of the United States. All this will, of course, require money—but far less than the world will spend combating the terror and violence that will otherwise flourish amid the ruins.

Appearing with Kaine at DNC headquarters in Washington, Obama said the party must build on his campaign’s success by reaching out to Americans in every state and recruiting new candidates that share his governing philosophy. In a bid to convince US lawmakers to put pressure on Pakistan to take action against perpetrators of Mumbai attacks, a group of Indian Americans have decided to hold "Washington Lobby Day" on January 27. Chairman of US-India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), Sanjay Puri said that the objective of this event is to show the US Members of Congress that Indian Americans and all Americans are expressing their strong support for the victims of the Mumbai attacks and for continued US-India efforts on the war against terrorist organisations based in Pakistan. He added that This coalition of Indian American organizations demonstrates that Indian-Americans are united in the condemnation of the Mumbai attacks and the need for cooperation between the US and India to work together to eliminate terrorism in South Asia. USINPAC and several other Indian American organizations including Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) have come together to set up a national task force. The task force aims at raising awareness among US lawmakers and the incoming Barack Obama Administration and garner support for India on the issue of Mumbai terrorist attacks. Soon after the Mumbai terror strikes, USINPAC had launched a petition campaign demanding that the US Congressional funding should be contingent on Pakistan in extraditing Dawood Ibrahim. We believe that in the interests of broader peace, America needs to demand that Pakistan close down all terror camps in its territory or risk losing US funding that has amounted to over USD 10 Billion since 9/11," says the petition, which has so far been signed by thousands of Indian Americans.

There comes a point in every relationship, however, when the sparks of romance, the fire that swept us off of our feet, fade into embers with the prosaicness of everyday life. When the flames die out, the relationship either just drags on or simply ends.
But we all remember how it is when love is still new.
